Are Video Games Art?

I’m not a big advocate of video games as art. I think they’re best as toys.

But I just finished playing through Hyper Light Drifter, and I’m nearly convinced.

For your perusal, here is the beginning and ending of the game. The pixel art here is art. The world is obscure and weird, says some stuff about life and whatever, and looks positively entrancing. There’s a neat balance of Kubrickian what-in-the-world-is-going-on and fun.
